Carpet Cleaning for Summer Allergies

Carpet Cleaning for Summer Allergy Relief

How carpet cleaning can provide relief from allergies…

We’re smack bang in the middle of our busiest summer yet. Apart from a slight lull in the first week of the school holidays, the phone has been ringing off the hook and we’re flat-out cleaning carpets, upholstery, leather and hard floors.

The summer is typically a very busy time for us as many people are off work and so it’s particularly convenient for families to have their carpets cleaned. And even though the obvious benefit of professional carpet cleaning is the difference it can make to the appearance of your home, one of the lesser understood advantages is the relief it can provide to allergic symptoms.

carpet cleaning allergies

The amount of pollen and dust tramped through your carpets over the summer months increases considerably. It is a time of year when the windows are open and the children are zooming in and out at breakneck speed!

A deep HWE clean will remove bacteria, dust and common allergens and keep your home hygienic and improve air quality.

Common Summer Stains

The are also stains which are more ubiquitous at this time of year. Grass and soil, charcoal from BBQ’s, food and, dare I say, alcohol, are some of the stains we find more often.

And if you have children, you’ve no doubt been left with a trail of ketchup around the home!

You may feel comfortable removing some of these stains, whilst others will prove more stubborn to budge. If you need advice, do give me a call. I’m happy to help over the phone.

And remember… we’re now covering all of South Wales and offering our upholstery and carpet cleaning in Pontypridd, Cardiff, Swansea, Bridgend and Newport areas.

How Often Should I Get My Carpets Cleaned?

How often should I get my carpets cleaned?

There are a couple of questions we’re often asked by our customers or people enquiring our services: What is the best method of carpet cleaning and how often should I get my carpets cleaned?

Firstly, we advocate the HWE (Hot Water Extraction) method of carpet cleaning. We believe it is by far the best method of cleaning carpets and it is the method recommended by most carpet manufacturers.

It is, however, important you choose an experienced, insured and trained technician so as to negate the risk of any mishaps. A qualified professional will always identify the type of carpet and stains present in order to use the correct temperature and solutions for your carpets.

The HWE method not only produces better visual results, it also effectively kills germs and removes common allergens, resulting in your carpets being clean, fresh and healthy.

How often should I get my carpets cleaned

Get them cleaned at least every 12-18 months!

Although people often delay getting their carpets cleaned until they are starting to look pretty grubby, there are more important reasons to ensure they are cleaned at regular intervals.

A clean carpet that is maintained professionally, will last considerably longer than one that isn’t. Most manufacturers will advise you get them cleaned annually.

And the small cost of an annual carpet clean will save a great deal of money further down the line. It is the soiling that builds up in the carpet pile that causes the abrasion that wears down the fibres of the carpet and can literally mean the difference in a carpet lasting several years longer.

Allowing soil to build up over time (especially in high traffic areas) will cause permanent damage to your carpet.

Cost of regular professional carpet cleaning

The cost of maintaining your carpets at regular intervals is certainly cheaper than replacing them every couple of years.

There is, however, an easy way to budget for regular cleaning and stain protection, whilst benefiting from free stain removal call-outs and low monthly payments. It’s called our Premium Care Plan!

But, whichever company you choose to use, it is wise to check they have equipment that is capable of getting you the best results and that they are fully insured and offer a no quibble guarantee. These are the absolute minimum requirements of a professional carpet and upholstery cleaning company.

Carpet Cleaning Training Day

My day at the TACCA carpet cleaning training event.

carpet cleaning training We have been members of TACCA for a couple of years. They are an important association in the UK, run by Derek West (who also owns Arcadia Cleaners) that educates the public about carpet cleaning and provide a trusted resource that enables people to choose a suitably qualified, local professional carpet cleaner. This enables the customer to choose a local carpet cleaner with confidence, knowing that companies who are members of TACCA have met the minimum entry requirements. Indeed, all TACCA members must have undertaken 2 forms of recognised industry training. And it was in the hope of learning new skills and picking up some tips from industry experts that made me determined to make it to their annual carpet cleaning training day! I arrived at the venue early and met Sian -Derek’s wife – who was extremely welcoming and made me feel very comfortable settling in. The day started at 10am and my first port of call was to John Kelly of Restormate, my main supplier. I have been a customer of John and Lynn’s for many years and it was great to finally meet John, after annoying him with questions on the phone most weeks for the last couple of years. One of the things I was most looking forward to was the marketing seminar by Allan Simmons who owns a carpet cleaning software package called Get Booked Up. The seminar was packed out and I sat at the front with my writing pad and pencil, eagerly jotting down notes. Allan’s talk was really informative and I picked up a few things that I have already started to implement in my business. Although I’ve been carpet cleaning for a few years, there isn’t a week that goes by that I don’t learn something new or another way of approaching a problem… And that was the case when I watched Paul Pearce remove yellowing from bed head boards. He cleaned it in a way that I had never seen before and achieved amazing results. I also watched Dave Althomstone re-tuft carpet and tried to pick his brains as much as I could and managed to (sneakily?!) record his demo with my phone. His work was absolutely fantastic and I can’t wait to put some of the tips I learned into action! Along with meeting loads of lovely and friendly people on the day (some names I’ve forgot!), it was great to meet another fellow female carpet cleaner, Karen from Bonne Fresh Clean, who runs her own carpet and upholstery cleaning company in Bristol. This job can be bloody hard work and it is great to see more women getting involved in the industry! I had a fantastic day in Cheshire and it was more than worth the long drive down. I learnt so much that has added to my knowledge and experience and that will improve my business and benefit my customers. If you’re a carpet cleaner who has already completed the regular training courses and would like to learn some new cleaning and restoration techniques and also pick up some actionable and effective business strategies, there really is no excuse not to get yourself on next year’s event. And if you’re a customer looking for a local carpet cleaner that is fully trained, insured and operates equipment of a professional standard, then a great starting point is to search out TACCA members in your area.

The Only Carpet Stain Remover You’ll Ever Need!

The Only Carpet Stain Remover You’ll Ever Need!

carpet stain remover

It is always wise to have a bottle of professional carpet stain remover to hand in your home…

But, if you’ve read any of my previous posts, you’ll no doubt be familiar with my contempt for many of the shop bought stain removal products.

If not, I’ll say it again – DO NOT buy these products. There isn’t a week that goes by that I don’t see the damage these products cause to carpets.

And it’s the same story every time I ask how the damage was caused – a simple spillage, a dash to the shop to grab a bottle of ****** and a splash and splosh later…the carpet has changed colour and the stain is forever set into the pile.

They really should come with a clear WARNING.

Something along the lines of…

“If you really insist on using this product, please be aware that it may change the colour of your carpet, permanently set the stain and, in fact, make it far worse than before you tried to remove the stain. Any damage caused cannot be resolved!”

Of course, the manufacturers of these products would never do such a thing as it would kill their product!

Of all the stains that people try and remove themselves, urine is probably one of the the most frequent.

And urine is possibly the worst type of stain to attempt to remove with cheap, harsh chemicals.

Removing urine stains without a carpet stain remover

Here is a safe and very effective way to remove urine stains that haven’t been “set” into your carpet…

What you need:

  • Plenty of non colorfast towels
  • Cold water
  • White wine vinegar/white wine/white vinegar (not malt) (diluted with water in equal parts)
  • Bicarbonate of soda.
  • Vacuum/Hoover

  • Soak up any urine with a non colorfast towel. Once the carpet feels/looks reasonably dry, use a fresh towel.
  • Soak it in clean, cold water. Wring it out.
  • Place the towel on the stain and blot. DO NOT RUB – this will damage the carpet fibres.
  • After a few minutes of blotting turn the towel over. If there is any colour transfer (yellow from the urine) repeat until there is no transfer at all.
  • Take your white vinegar/white wine vinegar pour it into a spray bottle. Spray the stain. DO NOT SATURATE!
  • Spraying with white wine/white wine vinegar/wine vinegar will eliminate the odour (after the white wine vinegar has evaporated)
  • Repeat if necessary.
  • The carpet will now be damp and slightly darker than the rest of the carpet – Don’t be alarmed!
  • Mix up a paste with water and bicarbonate of soda.
  • APPLY To the carpet with a back of a spoon. Leave at least 4 hours to dry.
  • It won’t look pretty, do not be tempted to cover it: it needs air to dry.
  • Once 100% confident the bicarbonate of soda paste is dry, thoroughly vacuum the carpet.

You should now have completely removed the stain and odour!
I really hope you use this method for removing any urine stains in the future (pets or drunken husband!?) as it really does work brilliantly and is completely safe.
I do, however,  recommend you have a great quality, safe carpet stain remover for quick stain removal that works on a variety of stains…

The Hardest Stains to Remove from Your Carpet

The Hardest Stains to Remove from Your Carpet

Let’s face it, it’s going to happen at some point.

You’re careful to take care of your carpets and deal with spills as and when they occur, including following a recommended stain removal process, and yet nothing will shift that one particular stubborn stain!

Why is it that some spills and stains can be removed and others just seem impossible to budge?

Here are a couple of stains that are often mentioned as some of the hardest stains to remove from your carpet:

Iron Bru

This Scotttish favourite has topped a list of the most stubborn stains to remove. The Iron Bru recipe includes 32 flavours and additives, one of which is Sunset Yellow Colouring.

A particularly tricky stain to remove and one that you are highly unlikely to be able to remove yourself.

Call a professional.

Never, ever, ever use hot water to clean a blood stain! You will set the stain.

You need to act quickly, but the procedure is simple and effective…

Using a clean, dry towel, blot the stain (don’t scrub or it will spread) to remove as much of the stain as possible.

Then, apply some COLD, clean water to the stain and blot and repeat as necessary until the stain has been removed.

If the stain has set and you are unable to remove it, then a good carpet cleaning company will have the knowledge and products to remove blood stains.

Here’s a picture of a recent blood stain removal we carried out:

The Hardest Stains to Remove from Your Carpet

Common Sense…

As with most stains, the best course of action is to blot not scrub, and if you are tempted to use that old bottle of stain remover you have buried in the cupboard, then please ensure you test it in an inconspicuous area of carpet first!

And any decent carpet cleaning company will help advise you on diy stain removal if you absolutely insist on trying to first remove the stain yourself.

Top 10 Carpet Cleaning Tips

Our Top 10 Carpet Cleaning Tips

If you’ve been a recent customer of ours then you will have received a handy little booklet with our top 10 carpet cleaning tips. It is a useful guide to caring for and maintaining your flooring after professional cleaning.

If you implement these tips, you will not only keep your carpets looking new…you will also protect the fibres from wear and tear and therefore extend their lifespan.

And, let’s face it, I very much doubt you want to be spending your hard earned money on monthly professional cleaning!?

Top 10 carpet cleaning tips:

Vacuum regularly: At least once a week if you’re a bachelor without a busy (and messy!) family. More regular vacuuming will be necessary if you have children and pets. Regular vacuuming not only keeps your carpets looking clean…it also removes unseen dust and soil that will embed and destroy the carpet fibres.

Deal with spills quickly: If you don’t have a homemade stain remover to hand, then place some paper towels over the stain and…

Blot, don’t rub: If there is anything that has the potential to make a stain even more difficult to remove, it is rubbing it. Vigorously rubbing a stain also increases the chances of spreading the stain into the surrounding carpet fibres.

Remove candle wax with heat: Candle wax can be the cause of much tearing out of hair! Some customers have even hacked and snipped away at the wax and carpet with scissors in order to remove brightly colored candle wax. There really is no need. Simply take a blunt knife  and slide it under the wax and remove as much waxas will easily come away. Then put a couple of paper towels on top of the remaining wax and, using an iron, run the iron over the spot (covered by the towels). The wax should come away and transfer to the cloths.

Use a good stain remover: There are many ways of making your own stain remover. Some possible ingredients include baking powder and white vinegar. Some professional carpet cleaning companies sell their own general purpose stain removers (contact us for details) and these are usually safe and very effective. Whatever you do, please do not use supermarket bought stain removers. They are responsible for ruining so many carpets and sofas.

Avoid excessive water: If you insist on hiring a rental machine, be very careful not to over-wet your carpets. Use as little water as possible and ensure your house is adequately ventilated. Saturated carpets can shrink and cause some pretty horrible odours due to the growth of mold.

Quality mats: Honestly, do you and your family ALWAYS remove your shoes EVERY-TIME you enter your home? Even if you’re pretty vigilant, there are usually daily occurrences that cause you to dash through the house with soiled and abrasive footwear. Buy good quality mats for your outside doors. It may sound a simple and obvious tip, but it makes a huge difference to keeping your carpets clean and ensuring they last far longer.

Carpet identification: Synthetic carpets are more forgiving than wool or oriental carpets and rugs. If you have a wool based carpet, NEVER attempt to self clean with a Rug Doctor or any rental machine. The potential for damage is great. Call a TACCA registered professional carpet cleaner in your area if you require assistance in identifying fibre types.

Regular professional cleaning: Professional carpet cleaning extends the life of quality carpets and ultimately saves you money. It also keeps your carpets looking beautifully clean if carried out regularly. More importantly, it helps improve the health of your home and reduce allergens. Try not to leave it longer than 18 months between professional cleaning.

Carpet protector: Premium quality carpet protection helps protect your flooring from stains and spills and ensures common stains are easier to remove. It also helps prevent dry soil from bonding to the fibres and causing permanent damage. I would recommend carpet protector if you have carpet in a particular area that is exposed to high traffic such as hallways and stairs.

Carpet Cleaning Gwent

Award Winning Carpet Cleaning Newport and Gwent

We are a family owned, award-winning business providing 100% guaranteed and insured upholstery, rug and carpet cleaning in Newport and the surrounding Gwent valleys.

We have invested in the absolute best machinery and products in the industry and I take enormous pride in the results and service that we deliver to our customers.

Hiring an experienced carpet cleaning company will save you a significant money in comparison to replacing your carpets and upholstery.

But it is important you make an informed choice so you get a company you can trust to get the best results possible.

Carpet Cleaning Newport

If you live in Newport or Gwent, here are just 3 reasons why you should choose us for carpet and upholstery cleaning:

1. Our method of cleaning (HWE) is recommended by most carpet manufacturers. Our methods  extract all the soiling and excess moisture from your carpets and upholstery, leaving them beautifully clean and dry.

2. We’re TACCA approved. We’re members of The Approved Carpet Cleaning Association, which means we must meet the strict minimum entry requirements, which includes operating machinery of sufficient power and holding full insurance.

3. Unbeatable results and honest pricing. Our results and testimonials speak for themselves. Years of experience have enabled us to build the knowledge to tackle all stains and spots – there’s literally nothing we haven’t seen. And the price we quote is the price you pay, with no hidden costs.

“But my carpets don’t look dirty.”

Well, appearance isn’t everything!

Regular professional carpet cleaning is firstly for your family’s health, and only secondly for appearance.

The average home harbors over 2 million dust mites that feed off dead skin and other debris. Microscopic mite faeces and dead mites are so small that they blow up into the air as you walk around your home.

Eighty percent of people who suffer from allergies are allergic to dust mites.

They are one of the biggest causes of many common allergies!

To limit the effect that dust mites have on your family’s health, you need to have your carpets and upholstery regularly professionally cleaned.

How often?

I recommend once every 12 months with perhaps a 6 month clean if you have children and pets.

FREE, NO Hassle, NO Pressure Quotation

In my hour of need…

Dear Homeowner,

Our love began on the day that you chose me.

You walked through the store, stopped and looked proudly.

You stroked my pile and oohed and aahed!

Coloured beige and priced by the yard.

The pain of my fitting, the gripper and glue!

A now distant memory, I lie fluffy and new.

Regularly vacuumed and walked on with care.

You’d check me for spills, admire and stare.

But as the years passed, I became grubby and stained.

You’d leave on your shoes, the dirt now ingrained.

And in my hour of need, when I needed your care…

I grew dusty and frayed, and worsened by wear.

If only you’d called…but you left it too late!!!

I could have been saved, now resigned to my fate.

Edwards Jeffery were ready, to come to my rescue…

But you dillied and dallied, and pondered the value.

As I land in the skip, you’re full of regret…

With a bill for new carpet, you’d rather forget.

Your old lounge carpet.

P.S.  Here’s the number, again, for Edwards Jeffery: 07530 532208 (I hope you treat your new carpet a little better…)

How much does professional carpet cleaning cost?

How much does professional carpet cleaning cost?

Like many other homeowners thinking about getting their carpets cleaned, you’ve probably wondered…”how much does professional carpet cleaning cost?”

Unfortunately, there’s no simple answer…

Several factors can influence the cost of professional carpet and upholstery cleaning. An obvious one is the size of the rooms being cleaned; it’s logical that a larger room will cost more than a smaller room.

Stain Removal

The number and type of stains can also be a factor (although we don’t think it should be!). Some companies may charge extra for individual stain removal despite having already agreed a price to clean the whole room. (Most companies have a basic call out charge and so it’s often worth having the whole room cleaned if you are already paying for stain removal – it may work out to a similar price!)

Cost of equipment

Another factor that will influence price is the quality of machinery operated by the company (and therefore results!) Part-time operators are generally restricted by a small budget due to not having the large number of customers of a full-time professional company. Therefore, they rarely generate the income necessary to fund and maintain the best equipment and so results are compromised and it must be accounted for in their prices!

Insurance & Training

Does your carpet cleaner have full insurance and recognised industry approved training? The cowboys in the industry invariably need to cut costs in order to keep their prices low enough to secure at least a few jobs per month. And, insurance is often the first expense deemed non essential by unscrupulous companies.

*** If you do receive a surprisingly cheap quote for carpet or upholstery cleaning, make sure to check that the individual or company is fully insured. Otherwise, if your carpets are damaged, you will be footing the bill!!!***

How much does professional carpet cleaning cost?

But I can rent a rug doctor for £30 and clean my whole house!!!

In theory you could. But not in reality.

If you were to only hire the machine and none of the recommended chemicals, then perhaps it would only cost you about £30-£40 if you shopped around.

But the results attained do not compare to a professional machine and you are risking all sorts of potential problems that would leave you uninsured. And that’s without the costs you’ll incur if the machine breaks down.

Also, once you add the cost of their branded chemicals, the real price becomes apparent and is no longer so appealing…

I covered some of the risks and costs in a recent blog post here.

But I’ve had so many different quotes!!!

Every company will have their own pricing policy and it will often depend on their experience, ability, overheads, quality of machinery and level of business.

If they are an established and respected company, with years of positive results and reviews, then they will most likely be in high demand for their services.

Conversely, a part-time operator who’s hired a rental machine and thrown it in the back of his boot with a handful of cheap chemicals is going to be able to keep his price at rock bottom.

Value for money…

If you’re not being over-charged for fictitious “extras” (cleaning chemicals should be included in your price!) and it represents a significant saving on replacing your carpets then that’s always a good start.

If you then follow this up with a good check of their online reviews and photos, you’re then in a good position to decide whether the prices you’ve been quoted represent good value to you…
